Competition
There will be three Rounds in the Competition. The Junior Division will play first each day followed by the Senior Division. Contestants will be placed in order through a random drawing by the Competition Committee. The order of performance will change each day of the competition. Contestants will be notified of these details prior to the competition. Failure to appear at the specified times will eliminate contestants from the competition.
Round I - Friday, Sept. 9 Round II - Sat., Sept. 10 Round III - Sun., Sept. 11
Round I and Round II Repertoire requirements and program timeframes:
Round I: A program of approximately 20 minutes of music.
Round II: A program of approximately 25 minutes of music All contestants must include within Round I OR Round II a work from the:
*Baroque era *Classical era (one movement of a sonata is sufficient) *20th or 21st Century (should demonstrate modern compositional techniques; should not be typically classified as Impressionistic or Late Romantic). For example, music by Ravel or Rachmaninoff does not fulfill this requirement. These composers may be used under “additional music” as mentioned below. Round I may not include music of Chopin. Round II must include music of Chopin comprising a work(s) of the contestant’s choice with a maximum of ten minutes (no minimum time requirement) with the exception of movements from the Chopin Sonatas or Chopin transcriptions. Additional music from any historical period may be chosen to round out the competition programs within the given timeframes.
Round III Junior Division—Any one Chopin selection from the list below OR one or more works not listed below whose timing does not exceed 10 minutes. Chopin works from Round II cannot be repeated. Movements from the Sonatas and Chopin transcriptions are not permitted. Senior Division - Choose any one Chopin selection from any of the following categories. Chopin works from Round II cannot be repeated. Ballade Scherzo Fantasy in F minor Polonaise: Op. 61, Op. 22, Op.44, Op. 53 & Op. 54 Preludes: A group of six One Nocturne plus Two Etudes
One copy of each work played by contestants must be available for the jury panel. Photocopies are strictly forbidden. No identifying marks (names or schools) should be on the jury copy; fingering or other educational marking is permissible.
A repertoire list with timings must be sent with application (snail mail or email). If you are snail mailing the application you must also email a copy of the repertoire at the same time to:
