PRESS RELEASE: TI International Piano Competition Winners 2013

Winners in the 1000 Islands International Piano Competition were announced Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the conclusion of the three day event. The competition was in Cape Vincent NY on the grounds of the historic Maple Grove Estate.

In the Junior category (under age 19), first place went to Clayton Stephanson (age 14) from Brooklyn, NY. The second place award went to Nadia Azzi, 15, Palm Harbor, Florida. Anson Hui (age 14) from Markham, Ontario, Canada was named third place winner.

In the Senior category (ages 19-25), the judges awarded 2nd and 3rd place awards only. Alison Chiang of Plano, Texan won 2nd Place. Alison is a student at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester NY. Tied for 3rd place was Belinda Chen of Bellevue Washington who is a student at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore Maryland and David (Han Xiang) Xu of Richmond, BC, Canada who is also a student at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester NY.

Audience members were encouraged to vote for their favorite pianist in each division. In the Junior Division Nadia Azzi (2nd place winner) won this award. In the Senior Division, audience votes were tied between Claudio Espejo Araneda from Temuco, Chile, a student at the Eastman School of Music and Yogane Lacome from Saint-Jerome, Quebec, a student of Michel Fournier in Canada.

Once again, the community of Cape Vincent extended a warm welcome to all of the competitors and their families.  Committee member express many thanks for all the generous monetary donations from individuals, local civic groups and businesses! Thanks also go out to families who hosted the contestants and all the volunteers who worked during the three day event. Without this support the Cape Vincent Arts Council alone could not provide this program for young people.
